I just put a 1974 double-headed quarter in a flip for a friend. They got it in change last week.

Any ideas on value or where to look? Probably would grade VG to F.

Thanks,

Seth

It's called a Magicians coin

One coin is skillfully hollowed out on one side and the other one fits inside after it's been shaved down

The line is very hard to see. It typically is right at the rim. As you can see in the above photo from GO they hollow out the host coin right to the line around the rim and turn down the mating coin to neatly fit into this.

Yep, It would be a Magician's coin.

Two simple ways top tell as they often do get stuck together, making the seam difficult to spot.

Usually, if it was taken apart and put back together during the normal course of use, they seldom get put back together in what would be the usual orientation. The front and back will be rotated in some orientation other than the way a coin would be. It will look like what we call a rotated die.

The other thing is that when it is dropped on a hard surface, it will not "ring" like a normal coin. It will sound more like a "THUD". Almost a lead like dull sound.

On some that I have found, you cant see the seam with a 30X lens.

Thanks,
Bill

Yep, I see what you folks mean. I also found why it could NOT happen at the mint.

I'll tell them what they have. (Surprised they even found it in change.)

Thanks,

Seth

Because it appears as a normal coin (Except with two heads) they get spent and later they realize it and kick themselves. They sell for a small premium when you see them in magic shops.
Rest in Peace
