Ok everyone, please don't make fun of me. I'm new to this and was just looking at some coins my great grandmother left me. I found a 1968 S Lincoln Penny that the bust is twice as thick as about other penny. I've never read about anything like this before, so I figured I would ask about it.

@FctReal, first welcome to CCF. Second, I hope that no one here makes fun of you for asking questions--that would not be cool. Finally, when you say that Abe's bust is "twice as thick" so you mean that this coin was struck in high relief? If so, can you please post a pick of the edge showing how much this feature sticks out beyond the rim? Also, probably a good idea to post a pick of the back of this coin too. Thx!

It doesn't stick it above the rim, but there is a noticeable difference when it's laid beside coins of the same year.

Show it next to some coins of the same year. In 1969 they reduced the size and relief of the bust and the relief has been getting lower ever since. You don't see a lot of the older cents anymore and so when someone first notices then the high relief kind of jumps out at them.

If you are comparing it to other years, you need to compare it with the same year to tell if it is higher. On the 1973 cents the rim is higher than other years.

Note the rim on the left. See how much taller they are for that year?
On the new coins the die creation is different and have a lower profile for the designs.

Devices, digits and bust on these are lower. So compare with the same year to see if the bust is larger. Even on the same year the bust can vary. On the 1982 there is a large and small date that the bust is different sizes.

Compare it to another 1968 S side by side.
