Hi,
There is
no mint mark on a
Jefferson nickel minted in 1963 if the coin was minted in Philadelphia. That is normal for all
Jefferson nickels dated from 1938 thru 1964 with the exception of the 1942 thru 1945
War Nickels , as they are called. On those you will see a large P over the dome of Monticello, if the coin was minted at Philadelphia.
So for 1938 thru 1964 (again with the exception of the
War Nickels) you will find a D (Denver) or an S (San Francisco) mint mark to the right of the building MONTICELLO) , on the reverse if the coins were minted at either of those Mints. You will find
no mint mark on Philadelphia minted coins for that period (1938 thru 1964)
In 1965, 1966 and 1967, there will be
no mint marks although coins were struck at all three mints.
In 1968, mint marks were placed on the front of the
Jefferson nickels down and to the right, next to Jefferson's hair tie (Queue). From 1968 thru 1979 The D and S were used again to denote coins minted in Denver and San Francisco but again there was
no mint mark used to indicate that the coins were minted in Philadelphia.
Starting in 1980, The mint mark P was added and used along with the D and S. It has been that way since 1980 and is the continued practice today.
Thanks,
Bill
