I have been invited to search 6 acres that has a house that was built in 1878 and has a foundation of a house that was built even earlier. The owner has found slave tags, as the underground railroad went through the area. The owner has been told by various people that there has been many finds in the past. Can anyone give me a few ideas as where I should search? I'm thinking that the foundation would be a great place to start, under the floor, or where it was and around the immediate vicinity. Any ideas?

Both of the places you mentioned are worth the time to search .
will you have more than one opportunity or is it a one time shot ?
I would also look for any area that looks like it may have been an outside gathering spot , cloths washing area , or out house , well or pathway to or from any other place on the property coral or barn .
there may even be a cellar hole close by , hopefully they will let you dig if you find a cellar hole since the over burden will have fallen into the hole that will need to be dug through to reach the floor level .
Good luck on the hunt and be sure and post some pics of what you find !

Check for the original location of the mail box. It was not uncommon for people to leave change in the box for postage due. I have found a fair amount of coins leading to and from the box in older houses. Also check for a milk or trash stand near the end of the drive way...

If you are able to search Everything then I'd suggest getting some stakes to mark off areas that have already been searched. It would make it a bit easier to do a bunch of small sections at a time once you have completed the searches around the aforementioned areas

Thanks for all the input, I have been given permission to go whenever I'd like, so I will definately mark off the searched spots. We got some good rain last night, so that should improve the detecting. I'll keep upi all updated, Thanks, Bill

Find the crapper. Metal from the pit is prolly worthless, but you may find some neat old bottles.

I was overcome by Mosquito's and Poison Ivy. I bathed in "Off" before I went, However, the Skeeters had TEETH! I will be going back in the fall after things die off a bit.

Are the grass/weeds a problem? Maybe you could offer to mow a little to make detecting easier. Sounds like you've landed on a potential Gold-Mine.

WOW !.....that's cool....I too know of an "Underground Railroad" spot.....It's an old small cabin in the prairie and the property is maintained by someone and the grass is kept mowed. I have been there with my detector but only found a rifle shell and trash. But, it's kind of trespassing I think........so I wasn't able to do a thorough job ! Ahhhhhh........if only I could find a cool interesting historical spot that I'm not trespassing on!!....
