Hi I have a 96 Lincoln Cent and it don't look plated. It has lil green around the eye like copper gets. But I'm lost as to what this falls under red? I seen some that they are calling red and to me looks like it's only red from way you turn it in light.( I know I'm probably wrong there on the new ones) and is a fairly new coin.I have seen a few red Lincoln wheat and this don't match up with them unless was just cause where the copper came from they used.I took photos if the rim where I've seen on plated coins it starts to lift up 1 hope there good that you can see all.
Thanks for the help.

You're welcome. Toning can happen during circulation naturally, or if it can happen artificially, by leaving the coin in direct sunlight outside, or from being heated up with fire.

That is from circulation wear, and shows toning as well. The thick letters are from Die Deterioration (die wear). I have another interesting link that I found, while browsing around. You might like it, and it will be a good read. https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/wha...n-hub-768426

You're welcome. I'll give you a small list on what to look for on Wheat Cents. https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/lin...penny-768219

Also, look for varieties and errors. http://doubleddie.com/287301.html Here's one more for you. It's a great website to learn about error coins. It's called error-ref.com. http://www.error-ref.com/

The natural rubbing from circulation and can lighten the coin. If you like it, save it. It almost looks like a piece of are. The reverse is not desirable. Maybe someone tried rubbing the obverse and it turned that color? (Mixture of hand oil) But if that is the case, then it might turn bad on the coin. Along with hand oils, come salts. This often eats into the finish on BU coins and makes them turn brown. (which is permanent)

They can't be removed with out removing the mint finish on the coin. So if you see these on a coin your thinking of buying, don't.

Mostly seen on BU coins. Old and new. The salts and oils on the hands affects the coins. Eventually they turn brown.
