Going through some inherited items for a friend. She wanted me to keep them safe during Florence, although it seems I got more impact than she did.

One item is this Draped Bust cent. At some point in the past, someone holed it and rendered the date unreadable. I think I've narrowed it down to 1798 or 1799 based on hair profile. Not much left to see.

Is there any way to assign any value to this coin in this condition? I'm trying to give her some numbers. Thanks.

It's hard, at times, to remember that at one point to someone that was just a cent, ordinary pocket change.

"I think I'll punch a hole in it!" It must have sounded logical at the time.

Many cultures around the world poked holes in coins to hang around their necks. No telling how far this old girl traveled before getting back to the USA.

Is there any value in this piece? My guess is no, but I'd like to give the owner an accurate assessment.

To me, for some reason it looks like a 97. I don't know why though. Lol.

Thanks for the link, two_tone. I don't use ebay and didn't consider that as a reference source. I'm surprised at the number of similar coins on there.

Definitely NOT a 99. Haven't attributed it but it looks like a 97 to me.
