Quote: Across the top of UNIT(ed), is that a die break or just a scratch? Small one on the top (back side) also. (1st pic) Does that add/subtract from grading/value? That is a die crack. It definitely does not decrease the grade/value, in fact some collectors especially like coins with die breaks.

Quote: This is actually one of my culls, Better look up the meaning of "cull". Looks like an easy MS63 to me.

Looks pretty descent Morgan to me.
I would say MS63. I don't see a rub from the pictures.

Could go 63. Nice coin. Great find. Looking forward to that 95-O!

Thanks again ya'll! I find the die crack very interesting, gives it nice personality. I will have to see if any of the others have those. I see I have a lot to learn. First is to figure out how to get better pics with this S7 cell phone/camera. I've looked at some of the microscopes suggested through-out the many posts, might look for a low power one to connect to the laptop. I guess calling it my cull is the wrong term to use. I will refrain and start calling them my extras. Do alot of coins have those cracks? I may have to start up an album of cracks(like I need another hobby). Think my wife would appreciate it if I told her I was becoming a crack hunter? LOL, sorry, bad joke.

bandsdean, I will post a few coins first, learn to do it right, get good pics. I don't want to do the 95 injustice with bad pics. Right now it's my prized possession coin wise.

Cool, more info to confuse this old phart. If this coin is a 63, with the die cracks, and the VAM 6, what would be the value of this coin? The Blue Book says it's at 42, what is true value if I sell it with these marks?

VAM-6 is a common variety adding no additional value other than the neat factor. A good place to check retail value is ebay sold auctions for raw 1896 Morgans. edit to add - and pardon my manners, to CCF...

Quote: Looking at the photo, I'm curious. Across the top of UNIT(ed), is that a die break or just a scratch? It can sometimes be hard to tell this from a photo, but it's usually easy to tell with the coin in hand. Scratches dig into the coin and create a "valley". Die breaks let metal flow where it shouldn't have during the striking process and create raised features on the coin.

Slowly learning. Tried another coin, on a printer white sheet. Did it in a dark(er) room with only a full spectrum light and every picture came out a yellow... did not take long to delete those pics. It is stormy outside so not much light. What would be a better light?
