Hello

I was offered today a 1995 Lincoln Cent DDO FS 040 Die #1
Graded MS-67 Red by Anacs. Coin is slabbed naturally.
and I was wondering what anyone thought would be a fair price
to pay for a coin like this ?
Maybe some sort of ballpark figure.
Thank's.

These are coins where the die state matters. I've recently seen MS-67 PCGS pieces for about $130.00. To be realistic, ANACS slabs are priced under PCGS slabs of the same grade.

ANACS MS-66 goes for about $60.00.

So realistically, a well struck , sharp...(the LIBERTY needs to be sharp) ANACS MS-67 should fall between the two numbers. You have to decide what's reasonable.

Thanks,
Bill

Thank you for the info and price range.
As far as this type of DDO on this particular year coin
i checked around and noticed different die types. Going with
the FS #'s I saw two others. FS 041 and FS 101. Would these differences mainly be pertaining to the amount of spread on the coins devices and or the quality of the strike ? Then in turn would the greater strike detail along with the spread bring the premium up ?
Example: the FS 041 looked like it had a greater spread (doubling) than the FS 040, which just looked wide and flat to me. The FS 101
i saw on ebay, but could not find any info on it and naturally could not make out any decent details with the pics. provided. Just wanted
to be sure that the FS #'s matched the correct attributes of the coins.
Maybe someone has some pics. of all 3 FS #'s I have talked about here.

At last count as far as I know, including all the minor Doubled Dies for 1995 and 1995 D there are about 15 different ones. The one you want is the FS#1c - 040

It has the largest spread on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST

My feeling on these coins and ebay is that when you really need to be attentive to small details on a coin to decide on the purchase price and as you say, you can't see the details. I'd be walkin' the other way until I saw a seller with pictures that are clear. Better yet, I'd go to a local coin dealer with a loupe and pick one up there. These are not outrageously priced in a retail setting and you get the chance to look at the coin first.

Just my thoughts....

Have Fun,
Bill

Also don't read the hype, don't believe the crap they will try to feed you. Look at the coin and grade yourself and see if it is worth it. If you can't see the coin clearly, like Bill said more on to the next one.

Hi

Thank's for all the info and input. The coin in mention I will
see in hand as it is one of a list of 5 coins a gentleman brought to my attention in person this past sunday. The 4 others are Indian Head cents and they are all slabbed. That's another post. He will bring them all by this weekend and he wants to sell all. Only problem is he was told (by god knows who) that the 95 DDO in mention was worth 150 to 175 bucks. Since I posted my first question I checked around and found that the FS 041 was listed at almost twice the price of the
FS 040 (the one I may buy) Then I saw an FS 101 on ebay and that went for 79 dollars. That is where I got confused. I mean't that I could not see by the pics exactly what an FS 101 looked like thus could not find any pics. or info on the FS 101 and what it even was. Oh well :)
I'll offer him 50 to 75 max. See what happens.
Thank's again all.
By the way, this is where I found almost all of the info I needed
on all 3 FS #'s. http://www.coppercoins.com/ No mention of the FS# 101 there.
I have heard of other die variety founders/listers such as wexler, coneca etc.
but I do not even know what the initials FS stand for (if that is what they are, initials for another die variety lister.)I've heard of a Stanton, could that be the S in FS ?

Hi,

Just a point to be made. It is tough to work with someone who has an impression as to the price of an item before hand.

A case in point is how older "Red Books" have the 1974 D DDO Kennedy listed at 200 bucks. Now the book has it listed as 50 bucks.

Other cases abound when someone bought coins from a TV show and then is interested in selling.

The best thing you can do is offer what you feel you want to pay and them back up your numbers with some current sources of pricing information.

Prices change, it's a part of the hobby or business as the case may be.

Have Fun,
Bill

I always thought that FS meant first strike, I could be wrong, so hope someone answers that question.

FS = Fivaz and Stanton, Bill and J.T. put the CherryPickers' Guide together with a lot of help from Mike Ellis as the editor. FS numbers combine their first initials. Just like VAM numbers on dollar coins Van Allen and Mallis...VAM

Thanks,
Bill
