It looks twice as thick almost. Kinda weird for only weighing .05 grams more Possible it's been plated...a few times

Is the whole coin thick or is it only thick around the rim?

My thoughts on the plating as well GO. You are looking at the thickest part of the rim. It's thick all around as well, but this is the thickest area. I know, 2.55? I figured it should be heavier as well.

My thought was a fin. Notice how the photo of the edge shows the coin at the thickest part and it is getting narrower as it goes around. The obverse photo shows signs of a fin. Finning from a high pressure strike would explain the thick edge but the low weight. More pictures would be helpful including the reverse.

I've seen several during those three years around that year. The upset (corrected) is stronger on the rim. I saved what I could find then and still have them here......somewhere. Reminds you of a proof cent for thickness of the rim. The thickness of the planchet is normal, just the rim is higher.

This is really interesting. Coop, I don't understand what you mean by the setup is stronger on the rim. Could you explain that a little more for me?

The slight excess weight is not responsible for the thickened edge. That's due to abnormally high striking pressure, which produced a finned rim. Coin metal squeezed into the thin gap between die neck and collar.

Pyrbob: check out the link below. It is probably an hour long, but check down in the index in the center for the how coins are made chapter. That will tell you about the making of coins along with the "Upset process." Also their are commercials just like the TV show. http://www.history.com/minisite.do?...ini_id=52493The whole show covers a lot of information but appreciated the points about the coin making and currency making. The rest is why we need money. Enjoy.

Thanks Coop. That's a good site. I'll have to watch the other vids too. I see there is also one on the making of currency. After looking above I realized I misread your post when I said I didn't understand what you meant by the setup is stronger on the rim. What you actually said was the upset is stronger on the rim which I do understand. Guess I have to read slower. Oh well, I have to go and watch some videos now.
