No I didn't find this. Had to buy it but price was right. I believe this coin was cleaned at some time. Just has that look.

Congats on the buy. This is one coin on my wanted list. It has great separation. I have always heard of it referred to as the runner-up to the king of Lincoln Cents Double Dies.

Hi,

To be sure it is not a fake and there are tons of them out there. There is a diagnostic on the reverse that is on every coin.

Just above the D of UNITED, there should be a minute finger like projection from the rim and aiming toward the top of the D.

here is a picture of it:

I hope this helps and congrats on the coin.

Have Fun,
Bill

Hi,

This is a perfect opportunity to explain to others that we who are immersed in die varieties can attribute doubled dies and other varieties because the dies have characteristics besides the obvious doubling(s) that are the same.

In this case, that little projection from the rim aiming at the D in UNITED on the reverse of the coin tells me or anyone else that the coin is a genuine 1972 DDO. using FS #s....it is FS#1c - 033.3.

That will be why when I might say a coin is or isn't a particular doubled die, I have more ways to tell than just the doubling itself.

You may see folks post the date of a coin and then I will ask to see another part of the coin like LIBERTY or TRUST. The reason is so that I can compare to other known die varieties to look for an exact match.

There are some exceptions but in almost every case, we can use characteristics from other parts of a coin to indicate whether it is, in the first place, a doubled die, and then next, if it is a particular known and numbered die variety. These things are called diagnostic die markers.

It is truly a science and not a guessing game:-)

Have Fun,
Bill

Great explanation and timing Bill. I like the little write up about die markers. So many misunderstand what they are for.
