Here's a coin I picked up at the Long Beach show back in 2002. Dealer Duncan Lee said he had broken up an original mint set to submit the half dollars to ANACS. He had included the dime as an afterthought and let me have it for a sweet price. It's in a really small ANACS holder. Any guesses on grade?

Somewhere between EF 45 and AU50 (obverse seems better than reverse).

If it came from an original mint set you would expect am MS grade. Was this a weak strike?

What I believe to be weakness in the strike should limit the grade to ms64, but it's too clean for that grade so I'll go ms65.
That coin just oozes originality, I really like it!

Hadley, I defer to you but I thought I saw rub on Harry's hair above and to the right of the ear, as well as on the flame. Regardless of the grade, I like its look as well.

Well, ANACS was a bit more generous with the grade. For the record, the pale area near the back of FDR's head seems to be a combination of lighter toning plus reflection from the slab. The luster is unbroken here (and everywhere else). The coin seems pretty well struck to me, although I don't think it would qualify for Full Torch status. I was thinking it might be worth a crossover attempt with PCGS since it would probably command a higher price in PCGS plastic. But, maybe it's not all that solid for the assigned grade. Anyway, I thought it was a pretty good deal for $35.

MS-66, maybe a whisper from 67 in an ANACS slab.

very nice!

I'd leave in the ANACS. You very well could get a downgrade with PCGS to 64-65.

I guess I was writing my guess as you were putting in the grade--I sense it would be tough to get into PCGS plastic at 67. You'd probably have a better shot with NGC, but that might not enhance the value enough. But without the coin in hand all is speculation.

Thanks everyone for your opinions.

HABIB, I would add that even with the coin in hand, my grading process still involves plenty of speculation!
