It is a token/medal specifically related to the Tennessee State National Guard (TNG). It may also relate to the Tennessee State Guard of earlier times. The presence of "Adjutant General" may indicate that it is an award of some sort given by his office (chief of state-level forces). 1796 refers to Tennessee's statehood and possibly to a formation of a state guard.

Thanks spruett001.

What about the "HH" on the reverse?

And are these items worth anything?

I was wondering if H H might be the initials of the Adjutant General under whom the medal was issued but I cannot find a list of names of the previous holders of that position.

You may have looked already, but there is a bit of Tennessee National Guard memorabilia out on ebay. Medals and patches seem to be fetching $5 to $10. License plates are where the big money is.

It could be the designer's initials. I have coins from private and commercial mints that make tokens and coins for collectors and those coins have the designer's initials on them.

Thanks all!

Albert I too have a significant number of coins from private and commercial mints that make tokens and coins for collectors and those coins have the designer's initials on them.

I would like to know who this "HH" is. I've searched and searched bit can not find any reference or info.

I agree that the "HH" is most likely the designer's initials. That's why I pretty much ignored that device in trying to figure out what it was. Your chances of finding out who designed it are pretty slim unless you can identify the mint that produced it.

The best route to get more info may be to contact the Tennessee Military Department directly regarding the origin. The current Adjutant General is Major General Terry M. Haston (only one H ).
