Has anyone found a Magician's coin? I had never heard of them until I found the first some 4 months ago. At first I thought it was a rotated die coin, but after consulting with Bill O'Rourke of Coin World (also on this site) he told me what it more than likely was. For those of you who never heard of these, they are coins sold in novelty shops after being altered outside of the mint. There is an outside shell made from one coin that is hollowed out, then there is a second part, made from another coin (usually foreign) that is cut to fit inside the hollowed out portion. This part has TWO sides; one being the reverse of a Kennedy. I've got two different coin faces on the other side. Two are a British half penny, and the other two are a Mexican coin. They usually get stuck together with the alignment out of whack. This is when they get put into circulation. The ones I've found (4) took quite a bit of banging on a hard surface before they would come apart.
I don't think they are worth much, if anything. Just kind of fun to come across and something else to keep an eye out for. I don't think they are made from anything but halves, but I could be wrong.

I dabble in the industry. If you have both peaces of the coins (Shell and shaved coin) keep them. For at least the last 20 years that I have been playing in the industry they use covered shells that don't have to have a shaved coin as its pair. This allows for a borrowed coin to be used and marked.

(Becarefull as they may still do this for Kid tricks!) I have not looked.

I think these will become collectible as they are not used as much by pro's.

Jeff,
Thanks for the input. I don't put them together, as they tend to get stuck. There just different.

I have a complete trick coin box from quite a ways back here.

First image .. Box open shows Wheat cent reverse on base

Second image .. box closed

Third image .. Voila' turned cent to silver dime
Magician's-Coin
Fourth image .. hollow tin wheatie is stuck to magnet on lid underside
Magician's-Coin
Fifth image .. Detail of wheatie shown, not a bad fake coin is it?

I just missed out on a vintage hollowed out (heads) nickel lately without the rest of the set. This particular penny to dime trick is a better set and the value of this is probably about 25.00 - 35.00 because it is about 55 years old.
