Why do people collect them? Why pay such a premium on a high end 2007 coin? Why not spend the same money (20-40+ dollars) on a Morgan dollar etc?

I am not sure why these should not be priced at the silver spot price levels.

Thank you,

Zohar

I guess the main reason is that its just a very beautifull coin. Most people love the look of the coin. As for me, the reason I collect them, is that my granddad bought one for his grandkids every year that they were made. Out of respect for him I choose to keep the set going.

wow keith! do you have pics of that set? I would love to see that. Being an american in canada it warms my homesick heart every time I see a nice US coin, but I rarely get my hands on anything decent here that isn't insanely over priced. I don't have even a single eagle myself. :( I have manage to get almost every year of the lincon wheaties, and have good start on a jefferson set. But not too much more other than some 3 cents (which I'm not too fond of)

anyway, pics would be nice if you have any.

thanks

Theses are beautiful coins! I am trying to put together an NGC MS-69 set myself. But I do agree that the premium is somtimes to high. I will not pay over $30 for a graded non key date. I also like to buy loose ASE's for investment silver, but I never pay more that 2 or 3 dollars over melt value.

Was at a flea market this morning and a guy had a DIRTY 2003 ASE in a dirty zip lock. When ever he told me he wanted $40 for it I laughed and went on my way. I heard him shouting something about 2003 being the rarest year and the coin was very rare, I went back and explained that I just bought a 2003NGC MS-69 from a coin shop for $28. He laughed and told me I was full of Sh@t...o well, his loss, no one is going to buy his dirty coin for $40. I should have offered him $10 for it just to see what would happen...

I have purchased these sporadically at MS-69 grades (including the 1996) yet have lost interest (I prefer the original Walkers) yet what you are saying makes sense.

They are not priced at spot levels because the Mint charges the authorized dealers a $1.25/coin premium over silver spot with a minimum order of 25,000. Simply, the Silver American Eagle is the most popular silver bullion coin in the world and the Mint can get away with charging premium prices for what is perceived to be a premium product.
