I am posting two sets of pics of the same coin as I am still battling lighting issues with silver pieces! I just got this one in the mail at a pretty reasonable price. At first glance I like it, but the hairlines in the left field in front of her chin on the obverse have me a little baffled.

Please let me know your thoughts on its condition!

First the "overexposed" shots showing luster:

Now the pics with some light control that reveal a better contrast:

I will try and sharpen these images tomorrow.

Hi Patrick,
Your first photos show a lot more luster which might suggest a grade as high as AU-55. The coin is fairly well struck for a New Orleans dollar, with decent detail on the eagle breast feathers and Liberty's hair. I see signs of light wear on Liberty's cap, cheek, and the point of the neck.

The hits on the cheek are a bit distracting. The chatter in the obverse field doesn't really look like hairline scratches to me. I do see what look like hairlines on the reverse around In God We Trust and above the arrowheads. Those might indicate the coin suffered some improper cleaning. However, your second photo set shows no visible hairlines, as well as much less luster.

Overall, I'll call it a solid AU-50, with a possible light cleaning.

Yeah, I see what you are talking about above the arrowheads. As for the field in front of her chin on the obverse the lines I can see run at about a 30 degree angle from left to right.

Overall I am a little disappointed if it HAS been cleaned lightly. Do you think that detracts from the appearance of the coin at all?
