I recently started a type set collection of Chile, working backwards from new to older, Republic of Chile period. The numerous condor designs are delightful to me. Here's a nearly flawless 1933 1 Peso, CuNi. The 1932 and 1927 Ag versions are next.  I curently have in hand 53 different (diff dates for same coin don't count.) |

Potsdam, here is where we last left off. My Great Grandfather came from Germany in 1882, and my Grandfather got me started in coin collecting. I've shown this before, but maybe some folks missed it. Here is Grampa in his Prison Guard Uniform in the 1930's. During the Great Depression he was an armed guard on a train transporting dynamite.  And maybe I'll let him tell the story in a letter he wrote.   And the coin he sent.  Due to the early influence, it is easy to see why I am attracted to the Morgan dollar. However in the last year, I have started collecting some world coins. These are a few of the German States.     My most recent world coin comes from south of Germany. And has a fancy edge.  Again, my apologies for not responding sooner. |

No need for apologizing. What an interesting story! I have grandparents from Suhl, which is not too far away from Holzhausen and also in Thuringia. Pre 1920, Holzhausen belonged to the German State of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
It's a shame that I've sold almost all of my minors from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1 or 2 years ago, but this would be a nice starting point for you. By the way, some of the Kreuzer issues from Coburg-Gotha are probably the most beautiful designs I've seen on German States coins.
However, I've got some really interesting Groschen from the 17th century left. I guess I will scan them on Sunday and show them here :)

"Some may call this junk... Me, I call them treasures." I often hear that line when my fiancee plays one of her favorite video games in which some merchants say that when you approach them. And it actually came to my mind when I thought about what you must think when I post my latest acquisition. Some may find it ugly, I personally agree that the condition is not the best but hey, 400 years can leave some marks on such a small coin. It is a 1623 1/96 Thaler from Brandenburg (also called Dreier because its value corresponded to 3 Pfennige, drei = 3), a provincial issue minted for the Kurmark Brandenburg areas. Its fun to imagine that people used to pay with these here, where I grew up and live almost 4 centuries ago.   Best regards from Berlin Edited by Potsdam
