...Yup, Hondo, I've come across some pretty nice (4 the price) finds lately ... studying these cobs does pay off, but, as a 25+ year collector, I consider myself just above "novice" ... there's a good deal that is yet to be discovered & learned about these coins ... I'm looking for anyone who's done research on production methods at Potosi in this particular era ... it's a mystery (to me) as to how details on the shields can be omitted & skewed, as it's believed that the shield was a 1-piece punch, & dies & punches were very expensive, & difficult to make & acquire ...
...anyone with info to share, please jump in here...

Well I went into my LCS just to see what he had in stock and for the first time he had ASE's in BU condition for $52 apiece. Now I know what they are going for, if you can even find them at least in LCS's. The premiums online are insane and the coins start at over $54 and easily fetch $56. Even a premium from a LCS BU at $52 is hard to swallow but what can I say ? Ive been ASE mad lately so somehow 10 of them stuck to me like velcro.  Every time I walk into that shop, even before I come thru the door, he's laying the great white metal out for me to inspect and I end up like a Bluegill looking at a worm on a hook in May. The man knows his business and his customers. Boy what a week. About 40 ASE's, a 10 oz Koo-Koo, a bunch of rounds and bars, and a pre-'33 ST. Gaudens. And it aint over yet. |

nice purchase, Silverskunk ... can't go wrong with that (long-haul) ... silver's in high demand, industrially, & the refiners can't ship quickly enough ... @bullion, silver seems to be more advantageous than gold, given the ratio disparity between the two ... ...my LCS here sells nice condition ASEs @ =$5 + spot, & often runs a special @ +$3 ... I yearn for it, frankly, and I have picked up a few nice pieces tho nothing like you. Its a pity I'm an old man on a pension and most of my coinage has to be bullion weight to leave my family when I croak. I dont know a whole lot about coin collecting but I do know its the hobby of the specialists and to be a success at it, even a minor one, you have to put the time and the miles into it. And most of all you have to want to learn. And while my kid does love coinage and has an interest in collecting I just dont see him applying hisself to the art form after I'm gone. He enjoyed helping me build my WW1 and WW2 Honor wall of coinage and currencys, in honor of the victims of that terrible time, but I just dont see the serious collector in him for me to spend my finite resources on the numismatics that I love. So I dabble, and really enjoy the coinage more serious collectors like you display. But as a responsible man on a limited budget I have to spend 95% or 90% of my cash on bullion as a legacy investment for my family. I wish things were different. I wish I had serious cash and 30 years of serious collecting behind me. The story of humanity is told in its coinage and it fascinates the heck out of me. So please, keep posting. Silverskunk...You're definitely on the right course & your end goal is admirable...IMHO, bullion far outdistances coins in investment return & no question that bullion liquidity surpasses collectable coins ... coin collecting is a hobby, & should be approached as such ... even the rarest of coins may not hold value, depending on the market ... Physical silver & gold have historically held as a hedge against inflation, & to me, is a much more stable & reliable investment ... ...Also, KUDOS on your wall display ...I've seen the pics & what you've done is fantastic ...a lot of work & thought went into your endeavor ... I hope your inheritors appreciate the efforts you've expended ... ...keep up the good work! Edited by mrwiskers

I bought this 1801 Draped Bust Large Cent for 20.00 plus 2.50 for shipping on USA C B. Not in that great of shape, but I had to buy what I could afford. It was the cheapest one on there.   Errers and Varietys.
