Italy 1914-R 5 Lire I picked up at a very reasonable price. A truly rare coin I haven't received yet. Obverse is marred. I found an NGC-graded XF details that auctioned for $2585   |

It all goes back to the French revolution, shortly after which the old livre-sous-denier system was replaced with the franc. But Jersey, having most of its trade with France rather than Britain, had always used the French livre and stayed with that for some reason. When the supply of pre-revolutionary French coins was ebbing a couple of decades later, a decision was made to move to the British pound - but, to maintain a relation with the still circulating French small change, it was decided that a Jersey penny should be 1/13th of a shilling, because that happened to be equal to 2 French sous. The first coins were minted in 1841 and the system lasted until 1876, when revaluation to 1/12th of a shilling was made. (Guernsey had the same issue but solved it in a slightly different way.) |

The official exchange rate in the early 1800s was 1 British pound = 26 French livres, and with 20 sous on the livre that translates directly to 1 shilling = 26 sous. The reason to have an official exchange rate for the livre even after it had been replaced by the franc in 1795, was that coins from the livre system - at least small change - were not demonetized in France, so they could still be around quite legally. Also, the currency of Jersey and Guernsey was the French livre until the 1830s, so there was a need to have an exchange rate. |

Didn't know there were 4 different 65's Dorado. Nice set too. I'm sure I have the common one of the lot in my dollar collection. Which is/are the scarcer ones? |

Another buy in from my Op shop connection.  Usually these buy ins bring a lot of mediocre stuff like expired pre Euro coins from France, Austria, Germany etc - but this one had some better stuff.   1915S Barber dime in Fine condition (A scarce date). Looking at American standards though, this would be around VF25!   1866 Hong Kong 10 cents - gFine/aVF but attempted hole on the Reverse.   1919D Lincoln set in VG (Not rare but good in a bulk lot crammed full of Dimes, pennies and nickels dated 1964 mostly for some reason (Nickels and Pennies only).   A free history lesson in South African sixpenny bits (Jacks) - Boer one with hole  1957 Union coin 1962 Early Republic silver coin. Also the lot had 1855 GB halfpenny gVF but stained 1899 Shilling worn 1920 Penny in good Fine (An upgrade  Fijian coins 3 dates I did not have, 1943 Penny, 1957 Florin and 1958 shilling. My first Afghan coin (25 Pul 1952). A lot of fun for $40. Edited by Princetane

Yes I am pretty pleased with it too. I love Barber coins. The Hong Kong 10 cent piece is a beauty too, so old! |
