Hi. I'm new to the forum I was wondering if somebody could help me identify the conditions/error of my 1884-s Morgan. I know the condition of the coin is not perfect, but I cannot seem to find this error anywhere. It appears to be a double strike, but it's actually more like a shadow.

Anyway, if anybody knows what it is I sure appreciate your help identifying it. I'm new to collecting, But I have invested a fair amount of time in learning about grading and understanding errors on Morgan's. I just can't seem to find this one.

Pictures of both sides of the whole coin will be needed to determine a grade.

As far as the doubling goes .... Most likely it's Machine Doubling.

What you're seeing off the top of the letters is called pull away. Typically on a coin exhibiting this the toning will be subdued in this area. I believe it is caused by the metal flow creating a hardened surface that resists toning.

and to the forum!

That's interesting, dave700x. I agree that, whatever it is, it is due to metal flow from being struck and possible Die Deterioration from the same metal movement. It's not MD.

That is NOT Machine Doubling - it is the pull-away effect of the toning plus some Die Deterioration.

Thank you all for you input, and your welcoming!!
I have learned so much just reading the posts and replies, that I thought it was time to join. So glad I did.
Regarding this "defect?"
Does "pull-away" affect a coin's value in any way? In this case, the pull away is on both sides, and on a lot of the letters and numbers.
Rest in Peace

Pull away has no effect on a coins value although some, including myself, will use authentic pull away toning as an indicator of a coins original surface. You cannot fake real pull away toning and once a coin has been dipped and stripped it no longer will act in this manner.
