I've been looking at s-vdbs on ebay every now and then, and I always come across several that look fishy. Here is one.

It's sort of hard to tell from that photo. I'm looking at the top serif, but perhaps it's damaged?
Here's a reference of the 4 S mm positions for this coin:

Here are things that make me suspicious.

The serif in the listing doesn't appear to have parallel ends, like the real ones you posted.

Also, the "d" in "vdb" doesn't appear to come to a point like it would on the real deal.

The mintmark location looks spot on for GOM#1, but The "s" and the "vdb" just dont look right to me.

But I'm just now learning the characteristics, so I more than welcome any and all expert opinions and admit that I may be wrong.

I agree with ya Johnny. And why would someone that has a coin like that not have it graded and slabbed? Mint mark looks a little fishy also.

Here is two coins that look worrysome to me. first the 1922 NO D and then the 1909S VDB.

The 22D has two entirely different 2'S in it. The VDB on the second looks suspicious but I am far from being the expert. Perhaps one of you proficient cherrypickers can disect them. nlp

The 1922 is not a no D, it's Die 3 the weak D The description even calls it a type III so they know it.

The last SVDB looks like it could definitely be real. The first SVDB looks bad to me. The mintmark style does not look right.

Yet another nice 1909-s vdb not graded and slabbed? Do they not know that it would go for a lot more money? Also it's kind of strange to see all of these popping up now that it's almost Lincoln's birthday. China's replica? Hummmmmmm Well here is picture my 1909-vdb sorry no S. I haven't found no one to stamp it.LOL

I think the fear of bodybagging by TPG is often the reason. Another is an intense dislike for the idea that they need help in grading and authenicating a coin. It should be obvious that a big 4 slab would bring in a higher bid, unless it is marked "details" from cleaning or damage, but at least it would be real.

It simply can't be determined from those photos. The mintmark appears to be in about the right location, and the right size. The parallel serifs are hard to see in the photos, as is the B is in VDB. The one thing the photo's do tell is the depth of the rim on the reverse. A genuine VDB cent (either mint) has higher reverse rims than do the non VDB's.

Simple for me, no slab from major TPG, no buy. If your a raw guy or gal, you can always crack it out.
