An older fellow I work with brought in his coins that his father left him. He had a complete set of mercs. But I'm not sure. The 1916d was very worn and I wasnt sure If I could make out the d on the back. I told him it was one of the holy grails in coin collecting and he was suprised. I want to put a pic up and I have a scanner at work but my question is, how can I get the best picture of this coin to post on here? I scaned a linc memorial today and it didnt show the detail I would need to have you guys help me look for the D on the merc. This is the same guy I traded my Red Book to for the 1876 vg indian head. (If youve read my previous posts.) Any suggestions?

Not knowing the type of scanner, the best suggestion would be to try to set it to the highest resolution, and then you can crop the important areas and keep the high details. If your scanner has a front panel to change the resolution, that is easy... If not,in the control panel--> Scanners and Cameras, you might find if you right click on your scanner, you might have the option of changing the resolution.

But in reality, if you can't make out the mintmark with the coin in your hand to turn back and forth under a loupe in a direct light, it will most likely just be a guessing game to try and do it from a photo.

But....waiting to try and see it

I have the Dell(photo 926)There is a setting on a few scanners that lets you preview your scan. This way you can crop the picture to the spot on the coin that you are needing to focus on before you do a high resolution scan. By doing it this way your not scanning what you don't need and makes it scan a lot faster. Doing it this way keeps your computer from getting over run with a bunch of full resolution pictures and also keep your picture size under 100kb and looking somewhat clear. Hope this helps ya

I wish I had a scanner of my own. When I need close ups, I put my digital camera on macro setting, then hold my magnifying glass over the lens and take the picture. It works but it's awkward.

Probably best to have it sent in to a grader like ANACS for authentication, especially if it's that ambiguous. The pros will figure it out for sure.

If it is a well worn example such as an AG or FR, and you want to know for sure, I agree, ANACS. Otherwise, you may have a dispute as to the authenticity or a mintmark there at all. This way, if it is a 16-D, now there will be no dispute. And, ANACS is the least expensive of the major TPG. They are good for authentication purposes.
