Hello all, new member here. l have been collecting coins for a few years now, and have had this for several years, but I never thought to find out what it was because it was buried under the plastic covers l keep my coins in. I have done some searching around the internet and it looks like this is a Janus Coin from Rome, but l have not been able to find one exactly like it in the sense that the faces seem different and l haven't been able to find one with gold coloring. The areas with wear are grey and there is gold (plating l think) on about 80% of the coin. lt is a little bit smaller than a US quarter. l am unsure as to what metal it is made of (perhaps tin?). l can answer any questions if needed, but l would like to know if anyone with knowledge about these can determine if it is authentic or not. Thanks in advance.

@mord, first welcome to CCF. Second, the letter J did not exist when real versions of this coin were made. I'd say you have a fake there--and most likely a base metal rather than silver.

@Spence, the first image is not supposed to be rotated like that, l meant to post it as it would look if you rotated the image 45degrees to the right. l think it reads MP? Or MR?

What you have is a tourist trinket
It's an imitation of a coin issued by Sextus Pompey
The original heavy bronze coin was made in Sicily after the death of Caesar and imitates the Janus types of the early Roman Republic. The two faces of Janus replaced with Sextus Pompey and his deceased father Pompey the Great.
The genuine coin would be of bronze and the images would not be as detailed as seen here
