Grading systems (coin slabbing companies) are an
optional service offered to the hobby. The hobby has "rules" such as, "Never clean a coin or you ruin its value." But despite the wish of
TPG marketers, there is no actual rule of, "it is essential to slab a nice coin." And remember once a coin is broken out of a slab, the
TPG system is subjective enough you are never guaranteed the same grade if resubmitted. Even between different companies the coin will not necessarily grade the same!
A lot of newbies get the idea, likely from
ebay always having so many slabs, that slabbing a coin is just a normal part of the life of every good coin. This is far from fact. Although, if selling online, slabbing brings in higher prices for a good coin of minimum $150.00 value b/c there are enough people out there who will pay the extra.
Before you pay to send a coin off, know that people on this forum can give you just as good an idea of a coins grade and authenticity if you supply decent pictures. And if the people here cannot help, they will tell you. In the long run you can likely save money to add more coins to your collection instead of a
TPG getting your money

Of course the other side of the issue is some people just enjoy slabbed coins. The money means less to them than the enjoyment slabbed coins provide them with. Some people enjoy competing online at the
TPG sites by building registry sets. All the more power to them! Its all about how
you want to enjoy the hobby.
