Hi everyone,
I am having trouble IDing this piece. It looks rather similar to silver Bactrian coins of Menader, but it appears to be bronze. Unfortunately, I do not have the coin in hand yet, so I can only show you the dealer's photos. Any help IDing this ancient would be appreciated!

Your coin purports to be an Indo-Greek issue of Hippostratos. However, the coin shows evidence of casting and should be in silver rather than bronze. The king's name IΠΠOΣTPATOY ("of Hippostratos") is below the bust.

Kushanshah - Great! Thank you very much for the info.

I did worry that it might be cast given that it is in bronze rather than silver. Do you suppose that it is a contemporary counterfeit, or is it a modern fake?

I suspect it's modern. The surfaces are soft and soapy overall. Note also the reverse edge from 7 to 8 o'clock. There is what appears to be a sharp raised seam (?) in spite of rather heavy "wear" elsewhere.

I'll agree it's a modern cast fake. Indo-Greek tetradrachms are popular and expensive, which is attractive to the poor in India and Pakistan who pass them off on unsuspecting tourists.

I did briefly own one of the type, albeit broken in half:

travelcoin - No I didn't go through with the purchase. I suspected that it was a fake given the surfaces. But I just wanted to be sure that I was not just being hypercritical.

I appreciate the help, everybody!
