I recently acquired a handful of BU 1898-O Morgans. The strikes aren't fantastic, but most have fairly nice luster. I will eventually put all of these up for sale, but I'd love to get your opinions as to grade and how you rate them for eye appeal. Which is the best/worst? I think these fall into the MS61-64 range with most in between, but Morgans are not my specialty.

Also, I realize that the VAM is probably without interest...what VAM does it appear? The "O" appears high and there doesn't appear to be any doubling of and of the date digits.

Finally, what do you think these should be selling for?

Thanks!

Prethen,

I would say all fall in the MS60~63 range (most 60-61) and one may have a shot at 64. It would have been nice to have this bunch back in the early 60's when the 98-O was a key date! Then the Fed dumped all those bags of Morgans and lo' and behold the 98-O became common.

Ok, time for Tighe to stink it up.....

First off, great pictures!!

1. MS62 Looks like a very nice strike, like the toning. Cheek is beat up, and one hit at 12 o'clock on the reverse that's big.

2. MS62- maybe 63. Could be a stretch. Again the cheek looks pretty dinged, and the strike doesn't seem as nice. What's weird is it looks like a weaker strike than the first, but it shows more detail above the ear. Lots of smaller scratches on this one.

3. Not sure about BU on this one to be honest. Almost looks like rub above the ear. Eagles chest seems to have a lot of nicks and scratches as well.

4. MS62 only limited by the cheek again. The reverse eagle looks awesome. just one hit above the "L" or it would be very very nice!

5. MS64 Are those hits at the eye? Definitely the best cheek thus far. Looks like a great example.

6. MS63 This is what appears to be the first solid MS63 in the bunch to my eye. hits here and there, but probably not detracting when in hand.

7. MS63 Another solid example in my book, and of course obverse limited again.

8. MS64 Not sure what's going on by "UNUM". Is that a scratch or crack? Regardless, this may be the pick of the litter in my opinion. Tough call between this one and #5.

Again, I stink at this game, so I am anxious to see what the experts say when they chime in. If they haven't already while I was writing this reply. Pictures can really make a nice coin in hand look bad on the screen.

As for values, I would have to see what completed listings are going for to offer up that advice to be honest.

I appreciate the assessments thus far. The guys on the PCGS board also feel that maybe one at most hit the 64 grade, but more likely is a 63. Also, they seem to believe there are a couple of 60's in there. I didn't think any were quite so beat up as to warrant a 60 but then again I don't see a lot of coins in 60 holders to compare with.

I would bet with less clear pictures, they would all change their grades to at least 62. Again, as Superdave has shown numerous times, pictures can be very disrespectful to coins.

These pictures are very true to what they appear to be in hand. I think that I would probably edge a bit more conservative on these and assume that most have their grades dragged down due to a few too many hits and scrapes.

A couple of 60's? They must have been into the koolaid again.
I see a solid group of nice, original ms63 morgans. One should expect weak strikes, they're from the New Orleans mint. Number 5, from the pics, looks ms64 and if that is a grease-mark on the cheek of number 7 and not a hit I think it has a shot at ms64 as well.
The only one that I don't care for is number 5, I hate fingerprints.
Nice group of coins, Prethen.
