Not sure that this coin type has been posted on CCF previously, which is always a little exciting for me. Plus it is from the 6th Century--in my view, a vastly under-represented century here on CCF.

I recently picked up this Drachm of Khwarezmia (Ifrighid Empire). This region is along the Amu River, which was generally the boundary between early Greater Iran and Turan. The rev inscription in Khwarezmian is "MR'Y MLK' r'myk", or translated into English as Lord King Ramik. Also, you can see the Tamgha on the rev behind the hourseman--this one is listed as type #7. This coin dates to between 525 and 575 AD (with some uncertainty as to the exact dates) and is attributed as Vainberg Γ/I. Oddly, I have seen the author's name on this reference spelled three or four different ways. Any further information or suggested directions for me to perform additional research would be welcomed.

Impressive looking coin, Dave, and an informative write-up. As you say, perhaps a first for CCF. Congrats.

You can download a copy of Vainberg's book at the link below thanks to the good folks of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World of New York University. It's in Russian, as are many works on Central Asian coins.

I agree an impressive coin and a type I haven't come across. Seeing that this area borders the Sasanian empire it would be nice to pick up one of these. Congrats Dave.

Very nice coin!

Dont know this type but really like the style of the portrait...The grid form behind the head I assume is some sort of headwear?

Whats the diameter?

Thanks for sharing ...A very interesting coin..Paul

Thanks all for the kind words and specifically to @ks for the link. I've got a book in Bulgarian so might as well add an e-book to my collection written in Russian.

@p, it is a nice size for a silver coin: 27 mm and 5.6 g. You are correct that the headwear has a somewhat gridlike appearance, especially on the back.

I remember eyeing that one. Very nice pickup!

The heavy weight puzzles me... being smack in the middle of the Silk Toad, I figured their coinage would have been adjusted to trade at par with the Sassanian drachm, just as the Sawashfan coin of two centuries later was adjusted to Dirhem weight for trade with the Abbasids.

It's a fascinating series that I wish I had the money to collect!
