I'm almost finished with my run of Silver Proof Sets from 1992-present. (It only took 13 years!)

I'm now asking myself, what's next? I'm thinking about getting the 1976 Silver Proof and then collecting as many of the pre-1965 I can, since they contain silver.

My question is - how do you all store them? Do you place them in Capital holders? Will they fit in the case with my other proof set? Or is there a better method?

Thank you,
AC

Did you get the reverse silver proof set from this year?

Ammo cans, nice. I was talking about the black cases that are made for proof sets that you can find on most online coin supply stores.

No, I didn't get the reverse. It looks like it's already going for a hefty premium. I figure no sense in having 2 2018 silver proof sets.

I just store mine in a sturdy cardboard box. Probably not the best, but I would be leery about anything metal as it may rust and potentially damage coins. I would keep them in the OGP, with the possible exception of pre-1955 non-flat packs. Some people think that proof sets in flat packs should be removed, but I have over 100 from 1955-1964 and all are remained bright without any spotting or toning, so I have no plans to remove.

@jimbucks Ok thanks for the input. What's wrong with the OGP of the pre 1955? I noticed they are boxed and individually wrapped. Is the packaging not air-tite?

Also, have you heard stories of coins going ugly in capital holders?

Thanks again,
AC

They have metal staples and the plastic material probably contains PVC. They are not sonically sealed, and coins could always be put back in them if one wanted.

I personally don't care for the capital holders, and many collectors prefer original packaging. Besides non-proofs can be doctored (polished) to appear to be proofs to fool a novice.

Ah ok, I was thinking about that when looking up Proofs on ebay. I can't tell which is a proof unless it's in a slab graded PR or in the OGP.

It sounds like Flat Packs are the way to go! It's hard to believe there are so many out there available still at a reasonable price!

Just be sure the coins are not badly tarnished or spotted. If not handled properly, those holders could tear or get pinholes in them causing potential issues with the coins. I keep the flat packs in their paper envelopes since there is a chance the packs may allow UV damage. BTW don't pay extra for so called "unopened envelopes". These can easily be steamed open and resealed.

The plastic sleeves in the pre-1955 proof were cellophane not PVC. And no they were not airtight. The sleeve material MAY have changed in 54 or 55 but I am not sure about that.

Don't store them. Give them away to kids for Holloween Trick or Treaters.
