It may not be a current answer, but my parents use ebay / PayPal and they bought a few silver dollars on there a few years back that turned out the be fake. This was ~7 years ago and the seller kept saying that what he sent was real. They never did get their money back. Best recommendation I'd have would be to only purchase things from sellers with high traffic (several hundred transactions) and have a high feedback rating (99% positive). Again though, this was a while ago, so maybe they've changed their policy?

These days, there is very little risk returning anything under the ebay guarantee.

I wouldn't take the risk to avoid the stuff-around.
Besides the obvious checks for whether its fake (rough surface, looks brand new), http://www.thesandpit.net/index.php...23_halfpenny is a good guide.

It varies some country to country for what their policies are. I am assuming you would be purchasing it from Aus from where you posted and international refunds can be more complicated. If you use a credit card with paypal you can get extra coverage, but in the past some people in the UK have had trouble getting refunds after being scammed though I believe a lot were sellers. The good news is that the UK press has gotten ebay to make things right on some of those and the UK and AUS both have government appeal options I believe where you can bring up ebay ect.

All that said would you be covered, yes probably but it could take a long time and be a big pain.

Given how easily this coin can be obtained from the local bricks and mortar auction houses I would say no. I just checked the last Noble Numismatics auction and they had 9 for sale, there's a Status Int auction this weekend with 9 listed etc.

I would just contact some of these places and see how easy/hard it is to arrange overseas postage but you should be able to source one no problem at a reasonable price ignore the inflated catalogue values. Good luck with your hunt!

I'd have a trained eye look at it - I have seen China's attempts at that coin and nothing is convincing so far.

ebay Australia is full of deception and rubbish and it sells well.. hundreds of people who think they have a 32 florin or a 34 centenary coin have something else.

1923 halfpennies are somewhat rare but hold little investment potential unless they are premium examples.
