Hello, I am looking for some advice. The other night, I was in my cellar and the dog was sniffing the corner of an old work area, specifically an old wine cellar. Upon further investigation I found a jar with thirty 1996 crisp fifty dollar bills. The bank band is still on them. I was going right to the bank with it until I researched ebay. The bills are crisp and sequential. They are a bit what I would call moldy-dirty. They have no creases. I cant find any errors but I am not an expert. They are rounded from being in a jar for probably 22 years. Any thoughts on value and if I should try selling them? A little more background- FYI- the former owner of my house who has been deceased for many years used to hide money. When the sons were cleaning out the house they told me where they found it and thought they got it all. I guess they missed some. This was ten years ago. They are longtime family friends who are well-off and very happy about my find. When hiking with my dog I would joke about him finding money. He finally found some. They are 2 set sof sequences:09848645A to09848656A and 10042876A to 10042880A Edited by Tibby 10/19/2018 8:07 pm

to CCF. Can you post a few photos. Value depends on a few factors, condition - run size - district - signatures. John1

to the forum. Congratulations, finding $1500 is a awesome but to take the money and try to make more buy selling it on ebay is just greedy. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth IMHO. Of course you could give it to the old owners kids.

The staining pretty much kills the collector value. People that can afford to collect modern fifties want nice ones.
I'd just take them to the bank and move on.

If he found a stash of 1500 Morgan dollars instead would you encourage him to spend them instead of trying to get $16+ each because that's greedy?

Spend them as fast as you can before the mold makes you sick.

Thanks for your feedback. Now - there's more to the story. There was also a jar of 100 dollar bills. I m not sure if they are worth getting a little extra cash out of them. One 1990, one 1985 and seven 1996. This is it I promise.

Hmmm. How about placing the bills in a container with a big bunch of moth balls. I mention this because I have never seen this treatment broached before. I think the moth balls kill the mold. Many years ago we were going through boxes, suitcases and a trunk of old clothes left by my grandmother. The all had some mold, except for one suitcase which had mothballs scattered through it , which was mold free.
