Hello.

Is the attached an error coin?

The Washington side looks great, but the Mississippi side looks like there was a problem with the die.

I could barely make out the "2002" and Mississippi design.

to the CCF!

Looks like a pretty major case of a Grease Filled Die. Larger pics will help.

To CCF! It could be Struck Through a large layer of Grease, but we'll need much larger pictures for that area, in order to tell for sure.

I'm leaning more towards it was struck through a very late stage die cap, the devices look distorted rather than just weak

I agree it does look like a struck through die cap. What gives me a clue? Note the inside edge of the rims. Instead of looking rounded, they are not strong, just like you would expect on a struck through die cap.

I'll contact Mike Diamond, so he can give his input as well.

While it does resemble a design struck through a late-stage die cap, I am somewhat disturbed by the faint pattern of concentric lines visible on the reverse as well as the absence of any evidence of increased striking pressure on the obverse (e.g., a finned rim). Then, too, there is the absence of a wire rim on the reverse (admittedly, a variable feature). As a result, I cannot rule out some kind of alteration. This coin would have to be studied up close.

Aresdudge, you need to send this to Mike Diamond, so he can examine it in hand. He cannot determine if it's a genuine error or not. (He will need it in hand.)
