Not an oddity, what you see is due to a worn die and quite common.But I notice a very nice die crack behind and above the Ear.

Looks like a retained die crack. Not a big thing, but that is was you are seeing.

Nice die crack, and an example of a late die state coin that has suffered some Die Deterioration
