Very (sort of) jealous of you guys who take such awesome pictures. What is your set up?

I'm very old school, I shoot a Pentax K-1 mounted on a tripod. Where it gets unusual is I use strobe lighting as opposed to constant lighting. I took one of my strobes and bounced the light of of the ceiling and the other was at the ten o'clock position. I felt it didn't wash out the nice toning on the coins. I'll have to try some more to see if that continues to be true.
Thanks for the comments...

That K-1 is a VERY nice camera. I use a Pentax D200 (very few of us use Pentax, it seems that Canon is much more popular) for my shots with a homemade copy stand. Works ok, but there's always room for improvement. Are you using a remote release with the setup or just the timer?

Yes baddog, I do use a wired trigger for each shot, no vibration. Nice to see someone else who shoots Pentax. I'm a landscape photographer by trade now and always feel I can learn...

I looked up the Pentax K-1, and it appears to be a pretty advanced camera -- much fancier than the APS-C Canon cameras that many of us use for coin imaging.
When I saw "very old school", I was thinking of the Pentax K (a film camera), and was amazed at how good your film-based coin photo was. None of my film pics of coins was anywhere near this good.

Yeah, when I said old school I meant that I'm using a tripod and strobes as opposed to some of the other techniques used her on the forum. That's what makes this such a great forum, you can get so many good ideas just reading through it.
The K-1 is a full frame 36.3 mp beast. Dollar for dollar you can't beat it. I've shot Pentax for the last 25 years. Absolutely love them.

The Pentax K-1 also is one of the few (only?) Pentax cameras that has live view capability. Seems like most of the Canon users in the forum use live view. Do you use that as well to setup your shots? Sort of wish my K200D had it so I could at least try it out What lens setup were you using for those shots? Looks like you're still linking the photos to your own server as well, correct? Those higher resolution photos are much better than the 300kbyte limit for posting photos on the forum servers

Baddog, yes I do use live view but not always. For the shots I am using a Tamron 90 mm 1:1 macro lens. Simply one of the best macro lenses on the market. I am serving up the images from my own server as it allows for the image size got are seeing.

Quote: For the shots I am using a Tamron 90 mm 1:1 macro lens. Thanks! I don't have a true macro lens and have been looking for awhile now at the various options. Always nice to know what the pros use Great website on your very nice collection as well. Must have taken quite awhile to build it and definitely shows the love and pride you have for your collection. I enjoyed looking at it.

Wow! Great detail, sharp, excellent color, and balanced lighting. Could you provide images (photos) of your setup? Thanks for sharing.
