2017 Mintage 150th Anniversary Vs Regular Issue

punman Pillar of the Community Canada 849 Posts	Posted 11/08/2018 1:00 pm Just looking through the 2019 Charlton Catalogue. I wonder if they got their numbers switched. For example for the 2017 150th anniv. coins they have 20 million copies each for the dime and quarter; yet the schooner and caribou are listed at almost 200 million and over 110 million respectively. The traditional coins were only issued in sets as far as I know for 2017 and I cannot believe they made hundreds of millions of these. Has anyone heard anything different? redlock Pillar of the Community Germany 992 Posts	Posted 11/09/2018 02:44 am In contrast to previous annual reports, the RCM's 2017 annual report does not have the category ''coinage dated 2017'' for coins minted in 2017. The 150th anniversary mintage is indeed rather low: 10 Million for Loonie and Toonie, 20 Million for 5c, 10c, 25c. However, regular designs were also minted during 2017: e.g. 5c: 106,68 Mill., 10c 199,925 Mill., 110,7 Million Quarters. These coins (plus the additional Loonies and Toonies) most likely were still dated 2016. Unfortunately, as long as the RCM doesn't include the ''coinage dated'' category back into its annual reports we won't know for sure... Charlton probably lumped the figures together. cedargrove Valued Member Canada 138 Posts	Posted 11/09/2018 07:26 am I didn't realize RCM would mint so many 2016 dated coins in 2017, but it would explain why there were so many 2016 mint rolls at the banks during end of 2017 and early 2018. Report this Post to the Staff

unruhjonny Pillar of the Community Canada 514 Posts	Posted 11/23/2018 3:19 pm I have understood that the mint never back dates coins, but rather makes coins head of the calender year - so right now (November 2018), they will be minting 2019 coins. Report this Post to the Staff
john100 Pillar of the Community Canada 5324 Posts	Posted 11/23/2018 5:18 pm The RCM don't restrike coins, but they could have a say a few skids or building full of previous years coins waiting to be distributed, that is why some years no toonies or loonies were struck for circulation.
