Some folks start by looking at the configuration of the 9 and others start with the TY of LIBERTY. I like to start with the TY of LIBERTY just because it is easier for my tired old eyes to see and if it (the TY) is weak then I move on to the 9 of date to refine my examination. Does the liberty trick work on other years? I have 13 1982 pennies I'm hoping to find a small date that way I have something on hand to see the difference. I just started getting into this. Compared with a normal coin it is smaller on LIBERTY: But check the sites for markers and see if you can match them up. If they match you've got the real deal.
