1964 D Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC I Know Its A Doubled Die Obverse / DDO But Cannot Match It. Insight Please.

Jim0815 Pillar of the Community United States 5240 Posts	Posted 11/21/2018 2:22 pm I found this 1964 D LMC and believe it to be a DDO but cannot match it anywhere. There looks like there is an extra horizontal bar to the right of the first T in TRUST and an extra horizontal bar to the right of the second T in TRUST. There is what appears to be a die gouge that goes through the upper pat of the first T in TRUST but you can definitely see the extension to the left. I am at a loss on this and need some insight please. Report this Post to the Staff

The second T could be a minor DDO with a partial extra horizontal bar to the right, but with something so small it hard to differentiate a DDO from a gouge. Report this Post to the Staff

The die gouge is on the fields of the die, which are the outside part of the die. Any contact mark on the fields will make a mark on the fields of the coin raised (raised as it is incuse on the die) and looks like it flows behind the devices. Doubled dies also affect the fields. The hubbing causes devices to be enlarged and the field areas are reduced making the area on the coins devices enlarged. Thus the term Doubled Die, as the doubling is on the die. So it is a die gouge that you are seeing. Note on the last one. Why is this one a die gouge and not a die crack? because a die crack would run across the top of the device, this flows behind the devices. Report this Post to the Staff
