If you do a Google image search on a phrase such as "Scythian metalwork" or "Scythian art," you will see some truly impressive extant examples of ancient art. I have to say, the following - which I just spotted on ebay (seller name removed by me) - doesn't quite make the cut. In the space of a webpage it goes from "bronze" (at the top) to "stone" to "clay." But despite that slip-up (and the fact that the bear doesn't appear to be "flying") you have to admit that the rather precise dating to "somewhere between 3-5 B.C." is pretty impressive. No doubt the piece, after excavation and professional conservation, was subjected to careful typological and chemical analyses for such a determination. Bids start at only $100!

Wow. This piece has a wonderful patina with original plant-based pigment on the fetish's face, but perhaps most impressive is the care with which the ancient Scythian artists drew lines symbolizing the ears, eyes, and nostrils.

I am sure this bear can fly and at the time of the photo was obviously tired and was...... resting. EDIT..Sorry Bob, just looked again at my notes on this series and there seems to be a misidentification on the sellers behalf...Its the red eared, red eyebrowed, red nosed type bear that could fly.The black eared ,black eyebrowed, black nosed bear could only jump..

No flying bears were hurt during the making of this artifact.

Paul, you're absolutely correct. I just checked Pooh's corpus on the subject (which I just happen to have in my library, below) and I see that you're right. Good call.

Seller is a student, and wanted a way to receive credit for Ceramic Art and Business Marketing at the same time. Bob, I can't seem to find that on Amazon anywhere -- do you have the ISBN (International Scythian Bear Number) for that one?

Well, the book is long out of print and not listed. The flying bear is, however, still listed with, remarkably, no bids yet. Here's your chance to snag it!: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Scyth...AOSwRQFbv2~lThe dual major theory would explain things, although I don't have high hopes for his or her success in either.

By the way, I want credit for resisting the temptation to say that the books are unavailable because they were flying off the shelves, and that the ebay listing, with a starting bid of just a hundred bucks, is a honey of a deal. Edit: I resisted saying those things because such bad puns would be unbearable.

It is a little known fact that the Scythians made a short, but deadly foray into Canada.

I think that they may have flown across Sibearia.
