Hi guys-

An absolutely perfect Theodosius miliarense! 20mm and 4.2 grams.

About 4 years ago a friend went to visit his family in Bulgaria. I gave him $300 to purchase uncleaned and other special coins if he could find and verify them.

He sent back several hundred nice quality uncleaned coins for me to play with- definitely worth my investment- nothing special- normal Balkans corrosion.

He also spent $50 of my money on this coin that his relative guaranteed was genuine. His email to me- miliarense, 20mm, 4.2 grams, good silver, relative says is genuine. Me-OK.

NOT! It is a very nice-looking coin though. What do you think?

Bringing genuine ancient coins out of Bulgaria is a risky business under both Bulgarian law and United States law. Numismatic fakery, on the other hand, is something of a national industry in Bulgaria.

@pendrak, it sure looks struck to me, which I understand is only one filter for finding fakes. However, in comparing this one with pics on wildwinds, it looks to me like there is significantly less detail in the hair and cloak on the portrait for your coin.

(Edit: Perhaps I ought to learn to read the OP a bit better before responding...but I enjoy a good combing over style)

I share the other's suspicions about its authenticity. These silvers are one of the finest issues left in the late empire; with a good strike and no wear, like this example, it should be of the quality seen with other examples. Compare, especially, the lettering, to authentic ones, as this is usually the first place a struck fake can be spotted:

Also take a look at the drapery on those; the drapes are contoured to a raised bust, but this has a flat bust, reminiscent of the early byzantine coins.

The reverse, too, looks like modern work to me. Have a look at the how the halo relates to the head on yours against this one, and the ones above:

Theodosius-Miliarense

The die sinker here hasn't rendered any facial features and you should be able to see the back of the diadem hanging behind the head, but it is absent. The cuirass isn't rendered with any care, but the authentic issues put a lot of work into it. On top of that, the reverse figure on yours is quite well proportioned, but the ones I have seen have quite a squat profile with an enlarged head. A final point; the star in the left field is always 8 pointed, formed by 4 cuts into the die, but yours has a 7 pointed star.

I would put this one in the 'Black Cabinet' as a cautionary tale; the Bulgarians are prolific forgers of ancient coinage.

with Pendrak.

I would keep it.

I have an extensive 'black' collection of ancient coins, all for one purpose:
To educate myself on what fake ancient coins can look like,
in all of their various methods of manufacture.

My first and last coin I ever bought from Bulgaria was a fake Hadrian. Luckily, I bought on ebay and I got a full refund. I don't buy from any eastern European countries as a whole. I realize that I'm stereotyping, but I'm still a novice at spotting fakes. In any case, they sure are the best in creating them.

Thanks guys-

Gave us something to talk about for a while. LOL! I faked it as soon as I got it- see the last part of my original post.

I personally would not buy even a common Constantine on ebay from that area of the world. Obvious fake sellers continue to sell, and ebay doesn't care- even when complaints are made.

I have lately noticed a lot of fakes posted on ebay being shipped from the UK. What about UK laws?

Later-
