Hello,

Sometimes, wear adds to an ancient coin a melancholic beauty and a sort of nobility it wouldn't have otherwise. To me, this is the case for this tetradrachm of Syracuse (a rare type) that I recently purchased. I just wanted to share it with the comunity.

Best wishes to all!

@ancient67, that is a nice one to be sure--thanks so much for sharing. As I am just getting my feet wet with Greek coins, I wonder if you could teach me a little bit by discussing the outlines on the legs of the horses. Is this original or the result of tooling? I have seen this same design feature on other coins, but none of those had the same level of wear as this one. Again, I'm not trying to cast shade on your wicked cool coin, but rather just trying to learn. Thx.

I like the way you describe it, ancient67. These qualities definitely apply. Beautiful coin. Thanks for sharing.

Dave, this seems to have been a convention. The device is seen across a number of these issues. Here's an example from another coin which may or may not share the reverse die of the OP coin:

Thanks, Bob and Spence.

Ther is no tooling here. Look at an another exemplar of a very similar type : a gorgious one, to be sure, and much too expensive for me!
