There are some really nice toners out there for 1881. It's hard for me to pass up on them when I find them.

This one is rather nice and I would consider getting it slabbed just to compliment my other 1881 proof-62 Seated Liberty quarter. Once I have 3 coins then I'll start my PCGS submissions for the start of the proof year set (colorful if possible). 3 coins = a good start on the set for recognition of an attempt. Anything less I feel would be not worth it. Anyone can just submit with one coin on that PCGS listing.

Too bad about the fingerprint, but much improved photography - well done.

those are the stills that came with it....Not my fingers. However, I will pop this open and give it go when I have a chance. It's most likely an old print....but the guy I got it from has been a dealer a while and I believe if they are prints then they were there when he got it.

Those could be prints from, say, 1882.

After reading Rick Snow's book and learning that the bigwigs in DC at the time requested some of the proof IHPs, I've always wanted to get a proof attributed to their ownership. It would be hard but I bet it can be done with family members who have kept them...if there are records....Those proofs should be slabbed and designated as such on the proof. Maybe it's the prints of the Secretary of State at the time F. T. Frelinghuysen. Too bad we didn't have fingerprinting analysis techniques at the time.

Even with the finger print I like the look of this much more then the others. Yes its possible its because of the photography and that I cant get a good sense of the others, but I try to imagine how all would look- photography aside. Id get them all graded. I know you prefer to crack them out but thats just my humble opinion, and for protection if nothing else.

Problem is, the print will hold this to PR-63 if you're very lucky, and that equates to a market value not much over $200. Not worth submitting, same for most all common date IHC proofs that aren't at least a solid 64.

Exactly......only if I went in on a special time when deals were offered would I even consider slabbing the raw proofs....There's a few I would submit like my 1879.....but the majority not worth submitting.....when I say crack them out I'm only opening up an air-tite holder and putting them back in. Some of those air-tites don't want to open up so easy....I'd only consider slabbing them if the prices rose substantially. Not worth it at the moment....Let's see what happens in 15 years though.
