Found this in a recent batch. It appears to be in some unknown to me alphabet. Doesn't look like modern arabic or persian. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hopefully Kushanshah will catch this thread...this is his area. Looks Ilkhan to me (Uljaytu?) - but, really, that's just a guess.

Thanks for the info. Found a website that verifies your assumption. I have been reading a book on the rise and fall of the Mongol empire. So far no mention of this (I am only in the part where Europe started to repel their advance).

Yes, Ilkhans (Mongols of Persia), Uljaytu. Inscriptions in Arabic. Mint and date will be difficult due to poor strike. Denomination depends on weight.

Yea its Uljaytu. Some of the ilkhan coins have mongolian writing on one side and arabic on other I have a gold coin of gaykhatu which has that feature. Is that something more rare for these coins?

Some are even inscribed in three languages: Arabic, Mongolian (Uighur) and Chinese (Paghspa). Not a basis for rarity but a factor of time and place.
