Condition's not terrific, but it cost me zip as a throw-in with another (non-numismatic) purchase. A bit over 19 mm in diameter.

Note the engraver's error on the reverse - I believe the exhortation was supposed to be "...shoot him on the spot".

Right on, Lucky Cuss. You got the "SPOOT" error. Here's the non-error version:

Great pick-up!

Although often called an "error" token, I've long felt that this was an intentional misspelling; this, considering the fine work and huge numbers of error-free flag tokens struck by this diesinker.

I've just acquired a copy of Patriotic Civil War Tokens (1965 Edition) which immediately allows me to get a much better handle on this particular token. It seems to correspond in the catalog to the die pairing 209/414 (Hetrich and Guttag #1043) which is only rated at R-2, and would thus be considered quite common.

There are many "common" CWT's with estimated populations of 2,000 to 5,000 or more. Consider that, if but one-fourth of the 1909-S VDB cents minted still exist, that's a population of over 100,000. This further adds perspective to "common" CWT's. Of course, demand influences so-called "rarity."

The SPOOT CWT's are popular, and as such, they often fetch twice the price of other "common" CWT's. Many "common" or lower rarity CWT's sell for twice as much as their counterparts. The Monitor and the "Peace Maker" or cannon pictorial tokens are prime examples of value being driven by popular demand; this, as with the SPOOT tokens.

I have a pet theory regarding this "error", that the engraver was Scottish and spelt it as he pronounced it....
