Looks like it might be wire. The light direction shows it is incuse on the coin.

Coop that is a really neat photo comparison. I have no idea how you were able to create the one on the right showing light inverted! How did you do that?

My husband used to work at a mint... and worked and fixed the presses.

He said this is most likely a fiber from the die polish cloths.

Struck though.

BTW... Coop inverted the color on the photo... most likely in photoshop? ;)

Pretty easy with that program. I just click on CTRL-I and its changed. Now I'm looking for an image with thread on it to show how the light reacts differently. (all I need to use is a coins device. (small one) to show how the light affects the closest side on a raised device, where on an incuse device it reflect off the far side of the mark.

Thanks - I just tried with my ancient photo management program (Microsoft Picture It). I selected the negative image and it worked!

Thanks for that...I guess it could be...the only reason I was thinking wire is that it seems thicker than what I would imagine for a thread or a fiber.
