Initial thought was a knife a or other sharp object damaged this coin but there's a section that's raised and looks to have been produced by a die. Any thoughts?

It is indeed a gouge into the coin's surface. The raised portion is just the metal displaced by the damage; it has to go somewhere. I hope that helps.
