At first look I figured someone took a hammer or something to this coin multiple times, until I turned it over, and noticed that there were raised letters where it was messed up. I could see if the letters were depressed since the front looks like that's where it would have been struck. Any ideas?

They may have hit another coin on those places making an incuse mark on the devices. The rim would leave that type of mark on the damaged coin.

Not to sound dumb because I sure I'm missing something. I can see how the front would look like that from another coin, but on the back how theres an "A" "s", and perhaps the other letter is part of an "M" that is raise not depressed I'm not sure how that would have been accomplished? I'm sure I'm missing something very basic, but in my mind those letters would be in the coin, not raised?

@erice, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with your initial assesment that one side of this coin was hit with a hammer. The coin has been placed on a (likely metal) object which had an incuse letter A on its surface. In this way, the metal has been "smushed" to form a raised letter on your coin. It is interesting to look at so certainly kepp it if you want, but the coin is only worth face value.

Thanks. I know I struggle capturing light with the magnifying glass... yet if I don't I can't see anything.
Spence... I think I don't really understand what "incuse" is. I'll have to look at pictures. Thanks for the explanation!

Incuse means that it is indented, an impression in the surface of the coin.
