Here's the latest addition to my collection, an 1853 Large Cent. Anyone care to venture a grading opinion based on my amatuer photos?

The first two pictures are as photographed, the background is a white kleenex. I felt like they were a little dark to see the detail, so I added 2 more pics and used my photo program to lighten them up a bit. Unfortunately the lightened pictures make the coin appear slightly grainy. In hand the color is a nice mid-brown & the planchet surface is smooth.

The following 2 photos have been lightened to show more detail:

I'll say AU-50. Noticed some rim damage.

I'll say net XF due to multiple nicks on rim. Nice coin!

Amazing how I can't get a picture that captures the "look" of a coin, but I can magnify every flaw no matter how tiny. There are two rim nicks that appear in the picture that are evident, but not distracting, in hand. This coin shows well in hand, but a good case could be made for either AU or XF. Since it's mine I like to think it's an AU.

Hi 007,
This sure looks like at least a strong AU to me. Liberty's portrait seems very well struck, with terrific hair detail. There appears to be some luster over the portrait, as well.

I see a hint of wear at the tip of her coronet and along the lower edge of the bust, but it's not at all obvious. The stars and denticles are pretty sharp and these are often very soft on braided hair cents. The wreath and ribbon are likewise sharp, with some strike weakness at the highest points of the leaves. The rim nicks and the light marks on some reverse letters aren't serious IMO.

I'd give this coin an AU-55 and I think that is a bit conservative. I wouldn't be completely shocked to see it graded as mint state. It has a lot of appeal!

PS: great photos, especially the first pair. They present the coin very well!

AU50+ with very nice color
The rims are not terribly distracting and I bet you wouldn't even notice it in an album

AU55 to AU58 disregarding the rim damage.
The stars look better than AU50.
Nice original looking coin, 007.
