I'd go with it being at least an AU, might be a MS but it's hard to tell from the image. The RedBook value is somewhere between 40 and 75 cents.

For the price of 1 cent, that is a great return on value. If you can, this is a great condition to shoot for on your cents back to about 1934. It is very realistic to find these coins now and then in this condition, but the ones in the 50's will be the easiest.

Looks to be a touch of rub on his cheek and jaw. I'd say AU55/58. That is of course without having coin in hand.

Nice find! I always say...Searching is fun, but finding is more fun ! I bet you get ALOT of readers to this one with a "56-S wheatie "in the title line....It does not exist ! There was a spot for them in the old Whitman albums, we have one at the shop I work at (the album- not the coin ) and occasionally you can get a collector really thinking for a minute before they realize that there were no Wheat Cents minted for circulation in San Francisco after 1955 until 1968. I guess no one has yet noticed it, or mentioned it anyway - are we paying attention here ? I was all ready to see an altered, counterfeit coin, sheesh !

I actually read the title as 55-S! Probably because I looked at the image before I fully processed the subject. I think my brain does selective filtering... just ask my wife!

Quote: my brain does selective filtering ... .... I'm considered an expert in the art of "selective filtering".....I used to think it was a "male thing" as women would charge, then I thought it was just a "lack of sleep" thing.....but, as my father before me, I think it's a genetic thing !... Now it certainly can be a "learned behavior", but it's also inherited....
