Big die crack at base of bust on obverse. What do you think of grade on this toner? Edited by SilverDon 12/14/2018 05:28 am

Beautiful. I'll venture 64RB.

A beauty for sure. Hard to tell from the photos, MS-64RB or possibly 65RB.

It does look "off" to me but couldn't really say. However the toning kind of reminds of the kind created from soap and water cleaning IMO.

Do you recognize that one nickelsguy? Is the die crack a marker? There is a satiny finish all over and I have seen that on fakes before, the nose is all wrong, so there's that. Looking at close ups of the obverse around the eye nose, it is a weak strike with missing flat parts where the portrait should be.

Impossible to grade when the picture is taken with the ' ebay tilt'. AU50's can look like ms65's when the surfaces are reflective (as it hides all the imperfections).

look at the detached nose. Yes. The crack is one of the markers.

Quote:Impossible to grade when the picture is taken with the ' ebay tilt'. I was actually going for maximum tone for the Eye Candy Post Your Toned Coins, was not trying to hide anything, and then I looked at the prices for a good coin and they were high so I went to the grading forum with same photos. Looks like the coin is a fake. Quote: where was the coin acquired from.? It was purchased at the airport gift shop. They likely had no idea. I will cut her up later.

What airport gift shop sold that? Surely not one in Newfoundland.

It was purchased as part of this set, at a gift shop at the airport in Nfld. I asked my wife to keep her eyes out for Newfie coins on her trip and she was nice to pick this up. Hey my first fake, it was educational and I like the other silver as well. It is all worn and dates don't match, and one is fake. Awesome.

Was it the St. John's airport?
Also, when was it?
I'd like to do a little investigating and find out where they are sourcing these coins.
Thanks

Update: went to the airport and spent $2 on parking to find out nothing. The gift shop doesn't have any coinage for sale. That was the gift shop in the public area mind you. The small gift shop in the departure area that is beyond airport security definitely doesn't sell coinage. I'll check next time I go through security, but I really doubt they have any coins for sale there. Airport stores are very corporate now. I'm thinking these coins must have been bought at a previously operated airport store. There's been a lot of upgrades and renovations these past few years.

The detached nose and the date looks 'off' looks fake to me.
