Here's an old friend, slabbed in a small ANACS holder. I'd be interested in anyone's grade opinions. I'd also like to find out what variety this might be. I know it's not the 25/50 Cents type, but I believe there are several other variety possibilities. Star #10 appears to be repunched. Do we have any bust quarter experts in the Community?

i have noticed some sellers on ebay that they tend to grade older coins higher than recent coins..

this for example may be graded as XF-AU but if it's a new coin it maybe VF

I believe the variety is B.1 R-1. The I is under the right base of the T. As for grade, I think it's around au-53. Nice, rare coin.

e-baguio, the presses in the olden days were archaic, to say the least. Coins often came straight off the press so poorly struck that they could be missing entire elements of the design, or the design would not be fully formed and almost have the look of a circulated coin. Nothing like todays mint, where almost everything starts off close to perfect.

Hadley and Pennypusher: you oughta work for ANACS! They gave it an AU-53.

1828-Quarter

Unfortunately my photos don't do this coin justice. It has beautiful blue peripheral toning (Hadley, I think you would appreciate it!) and strong prooflike reflectivity in the fields.

I bought this coin in October 2002 from Sacramento dealer John McIntosh (whom I highly recommend). Some time later I was browsing my copy of the Heritage catalog from their November, 2000 Signature auction held in Santa Clara, CA and saw a listing for an ANACS-graded 1828 quarter in AU-53. I had marked the listing when I first read the catalog in 2000 as a coin of interest, although I don't remember whether I placed a bid. This lot was not illustrated in the catalog, but I looked up the photo on the Heritage auction archives and saw it was the same coin! It didn't sell at that auction but somehow ended up in Mac's inventory. Here's the catalog photo copied from the Heritage auction archives. I just thought it was a cool coincidence that I ended up with the coin after all.
