Now like all people I want this to be a "no d", however logic dictates that's not plausible. Now, the pictures don't really catch it, but there is a large, deep gouge where the MM would be that is in the direction of the displaced metal/MM. So, I assume a failed removal of the 'D' MM. What do you think? Damaged 1922-D? Damaged 1922-Weak D? Let me know,

Thanks,

GC.

Here is an overlay to see if the coin was dimpled on the reverse?

With all the tooling marks, it screams that somebody tried to take the "D" off of it and failed miserably.
Rest in Peace

It looks to me like a 22-D that took a nasty hit right on the MM .
Coop, what the heck does your photos have to do with OP's coin .

If work was done to remove the mintmark and if that caused a corresponding swelling on the reverse , Coops overlay would give us a location on the reverse to find it.

Same here. This will never be anything but a damaged 1922D.

LOL I thought so, still worth $5 though, nicer find from that batch, save the 2 IHC's and the FEC.
