My employer decided to terminate my project today without notice and zero severance pay (nice huh?). In order to pay bills, I will be liquidating some coins. Wondering if a couple of 1 oz proof US platinum coins are worth sending in to TPG for submission or not. Same question for 1 oz proof US gold coins.

Thank You.

Can't speak for gold, but on the platinum side, prices for PCGS PR69s aren't a whole lot higher than spot (looking at the sold listings on ebay). On the PCGS population listings, 69s outnumber 70s by at least 2 to 1 for most issues. Based on those odds, you wouldn't gain a lot from grading except for authentication unless you got a 70, in which case there is a fair premium. That said, this is just from a quick scan on ebay -- if you have a less common date, that could be worth more.

Very sorry to hear about that, jimbucks.

I'm guessing you're assuming your coins will grade 69 or 70... man that's a tough call. I'd try to get a feel for how many are on the market before spending the money on grading. Don't know your situation but I'd probably just liquidate given the time to get your cons back and needing to cover bills.

Good luck, sir.

Could they be yes, they could. But without knowing specifics there is no way to say.

That said you will very likely be better off selling them and getting the money now than hoping to have it in a couple months with the holidays and hoping they get a 70. If you don't have a lot of experience its hard to say on one offs, and taking the money now will very likely be the best for you and your family overall especially if you need it to pay bills. The grading delay will be about a month at this point of the year if not longer unless you get lucky.

Sorry to hear what happened.

Actually I did not say this, although you may have implied it. These are 2005 and 2006 coins I obtained directly from the mint, so not graded before. I can wait a month or so to sell if needed. Just planning ahead.

Thank You.

You completely misread what I had said. Sorry for trying to help. Best of luck I will keep to myself.

The difference here is that you are not grading ASE's and spending for grading almost what the coin cost...so 75% of the coin value just to put it in a slab

When you are dealing with around $800-1000 coins the cost of grading is minimal percentage wise.....

I would slab them for a few reasons...they will become products that will be somewhat easier to sell because they will be:

>>>proven to be genuine (big deal nowadays)
>>>have a known grade and thus have a defined value range
>>>no issues with "not as described" issues when selling raw coins

If you get a 70 grade that's just frosting on the cake....

Now if you had a bunch of older ASE's it might not be AS worth it....

I was inclined to say skip the grading and sell as is, but Foxwoods does make some good points.

There's also the time it takes for grading to take into consideration if quick cash is needed. If there's a coin show with graders present, I guess that's an option.

That is probably how I would do it if I ever wanted to get any coins graded.

It's MUCH more expensive that way, but yes much quicker too

I suppose it is good that if I ever wanted to get something graded, I would probably want/need it done rather quickly.

I don't know where you are located but the only shows with on site grading over the next 2 months are in Orlando mid-January (PCGS & NGC) and Long Beach 1/31 (PCGS)
